You only pay for performance! The industry practice is to take a percentage of the claim you get as a fee. Choose a SR&ED Engineering firm that is willing to negotiate.

Fees range from 15% to 28% of the refund you are entitled to. The amount of the fee is dictated by how large the claim is, and how much work is involved creating a successful claim for the CRA.

Before you opt to go it alone or just have your accountant take care of it, keep in mind that a SR&ED claim is 15% accounting, and 85% technical. Because of this, an SR&ED Engineer can sometimes increase a claim by as much as 250%.

As a simple example, imagine a chair that is made by your factory. Where the accountant sees the chair and some related components, an engineer will break the chair down into distinct elements: laminates and fixtures, tooling and ergonomic devices, materials and hardware, and so on. This dramatically increases the potential for increased leverage in all of your research and development tax credit activities.
